What is a Kook?
kook /k-oo-k/
In surf culture, a kook is someone who's new to surfing – inexperienced, still learning the etiquette, probably got in someone's way in the lineup. Historically, it has been used as an insult.
Outside of surfing, it can mean an eccentric or quirky person, someone a little odd, marching to their own beat.
The Kook Collective reclaims it.
Everyone starts somewhere.
No Shame.
Be a KOOK.
If there's one thing that every single surfer may have experienced at least once in their life, it's the feeling of shame for being a KOOK. From the outside looking in, surfing and the ocean looks incredibly intimidating. There are people who have been surfing for years - they look really cool and confident and we're right next to them just wiping out. Many surfers have experienced behaviors that are not welcoming in the lineup, such as exclusivity, localism, gatekeeping, judgement and shaming ("no kooks allowed!"). How does someone just beginning their surf journey paddle into that without feeling ashamed, scared, and intimidated?
We're all looking for a place where we don't have to perform, achieve perfection or compare ourselves to others appearing to achieve perfection - a place where we can just exist as true HUMAN BEINGS. The reality of being a human is that we're probably going to be bad at something when we first try something new. We make mistakes. We wipe out. We learn and grow.
Especially with the rise of AI, social media influencers, and the perpetuation of perfection seen in our culture, people now more than ever are looking for things that are truly authentic, human, raw and real. This same sentiment is reflected in surfing culture. What if we accept that we may not look like the coolest, sickest, highest performing surfer out there? What if we just want to try something new, be silly, have fun, be open and supportive of one another?
That's the foundation of The Kook Collective. In a world where we focus on the outward projection of perfection, we lose sight of what it actually means to be human. We wipe out, we laugh at ourselves, and we still keep trying and paddle back out anyway.
The Kook Collective is a brand that embraces being a kook, being a beginner, trying something new, not taking things so seriously, laughing at ourselves, figuring things out as we go and giving ourselves permission to just have fun.
Everyone is welcome here.
